EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) is a management tool to improve companies' environmental performance. It is available in Europe for all business sectors since 2001 when it was reviewed by the European Regulation (EC) No 761/2001 - or EMAS II.

In a few words EMAS, is an Environmental Management System (EMS), exactly as established by ISO 14001, and the additional requirement to issue a public statement that reports the company's environmental performance.

EMAS is strongly backed by Government and the environmental regulators, thus it can be an advantage for some companies willing to satisfy regulator's requirements and be involved in government programmes. In fact, many organizations implements both ISO 14001 and EMAS and maintain certification/ registration to both.

Bureau Veritas Certification is currently accredited in Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Sweden, Netherlands, Spain and the UK to offer Verification of the EMS and Validation of the Environmental Statement.
